The official statistics for Research & Development (R&D) in Greece, with indicators for expenditure spent and personnel engaged in R&D activities, were sent to Eurostat by the National Documentation Center (EKT), after numerous years of Greece's absence. The data for 2011 and 2012 are now available in the Eurostat database and are already used for framing research and innovation policies, such as Smart Specialisation Strategies for Greek Regions. Overall findings so far are encouraging as Gross Domestic Expenditure for R&D reached 0.69 of GDP (EUR 1,338 million) in 2012.
Supporting the configuration of evidence-based policies constitutes a strategic priority for EKT, which applies science for developing research and innovation policies. Dr. Evi Sachini, director of EKT, points out that 'as a countrys economic growth and prosperity depend on the resources available for conducting and supporting activities for R&D, R&D statistics are the basis for the formulation and monitoring of policies, both at European and national level'. The production of R&D statistics is implemented by EKT after the assignment from the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, in cooperation with the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). It is worth noting that ELSTAT and EKT recently signed a Memorandum of Cooperation concerning the investigation of Innovation, Research and Development. The data analysis and export of the relevant indicators for 2011 have already been published in EKT's edition 'Indicators Research & Development expenditure and personnel in 2011 in Greece', that is available online on the website: http://metrics.ekt.gr/en/node/117.
