Continuing its 'Tribute to the Year of Physics/Einstein Year', and in collaboration with the British Council, the National Hellenic Research Foundation is holding the 'Sunday Mornings' - a series of science events whose purpose is to convey to the general public the beauty and ingenuity of scientific thought.
Specifically, three events will be held:
a) Sunday 22 May 2005, 'Physics for All'
- 'Atoms and Molecules: from Democritus to Einstein', Speaker: Professor David Field
- A series of simple but fascinating experiments with audience participation, conducted by a group of English science communicators from Englands Open University, through which the audience will discover the wonderful world of physics (adventures with sound, light, electricity, magnetism and radioactivity).
b) Sunday 29 May 2005, 'Science Caf?' (Limited audience participation)
In this open dialogue on science, the subject 'Astroparticle Physics the Neutrino, a New 'Messenger' for the Universe' will be presented and discussed. Participants: Ion Siotis, Physicist, Director of the National Centre for Scientific Research DEMOKRITOS; Leonidas Resvanis, Director of the 'Nestor' Institute for Neutrino Astroparticle Physics
c) Sunday 5 June 2005, 'A Morning with Albert Einstein'
A colourful presentation of Einsteins life and scientific work by Gary Barber, with audience participation. It should be noted that the event has been particularly successful at science festivals in Europe.
Participants in the Sunday Mornings will have the opportunity to take part in simple physics experiments, speak directly with scientists and science communicators and participate in a dialogue that will show that specialised scientific knowledge is accessible to everyone.
All the events will be held in the 'Leonidas Zervas' Amphitheatre, in the Meeting Hall and in the ground floor area of the EIE (48 Vas. Konstantinou Ave., Athens). Admission is free and the scheduled starting time is 11:00 am.
