EIT Health Morning Health Talks: Innovations in Care

An in-depth discussion about innovations in health care, "EIT Health Morning Health Talks: Innovations in Care", was organized on Tuesday 28th of May 2024 at the General Hospital of Athens "Laiko" (Phaidon Fessas Hall), by the National Documentation Center (EKT), in its role as EIT Health hub Coordinator in Greece, and the Nursing Service of the Athens General Hospital "Laiko".

The event was welcomed by Theofanis Roides, Commander of GNA Laiko and Theoni Zougou, Head of the Nursing Service Directorate of GNA Laiko, who referred to the need to modernize the care sector in Greece in order to upgrade the services offered to citizens.

Innovations that have been implemented in other European countries and their results were discussed, ways of utilizing health data to implement health strategies and draw valuable conclusions, the interoperability of data with other systems and applications, but also with the health systems of other countries. In particular, Dorota Kilanska, Director, ICN-Accredited Center for ICNP® Research & Development at the Medical University of Łódź, cited examples of innovations that support the care and daily work of nurses in Poland.

During the event, a discussion was held on patient safety, prescription errors and how they can be avoided, the regulatory framework, ways to decompress and improve the services of Greek hospitals, while digital transformation projects in the health sector were also presented in the process of implementation with the Ministry of Health supervised by Theodoros Pachatouris, Head of Operations, Digital Sector BRAINS I.C.S..

Some of the projects presented at the event are the evaluation and monitoring of the digital readiness of Greek hospitals, the unified drug management and monitoring system, as well as the unified medical technology equipment management system.

In addition, ways in which artificial intelligence can help diagnoses, but also the health system, were presented, increasing the productivity of hospitals and contributing to the work of nurses. The challenges arising from the use of artificial intelligence were not missing from the discussion and ways to solve potential problems were presented.

Petros Podaras, Coordinator of the Innovation Center of the Attica Region, presented financing opportunities for businesses dealing with innovations in the field of care, while Chrysa Panagiotou, Director of Nursing Services at the Onassios Cardiac Surgery Center, explained how Onassios has progressed in the digital transition of services and what this means in practice for nurses and patients.

More than 50 people participated in the discussion, mainly nurses from Greek hospitals, executives of the Attica Region and digital technology companies, while an additional 50 people watched the event online.

The discussion was moderated by Marios Roides, from the EKT, coordinator of the EIT Health Hub in Greece.
